Setting up a site visit with the Arab & Muslim Awareness group was a very difficult process. None of our schedules seemed to match up. On Friday November 9, I was able to go to Bessie Carmichael Elementary school and watch the girls present to a class of 5th graders. All of my struggling to get there paid off once the girls started to present. They were very interactive with the kids and they were able to get their attention. The girls asked the kid’s questions like how many Arab countries there are, and who Arabs are. If the kids answered the questions correctly they were rewarded with candy or key chains. The girls gave very insightful information on who Arabs and Muslims are as well as breaking stereotypes. They told the kids about the stereotypes against Arabs and Muslims, and clarified them. The girls really surprised me they were very well prepared with their presentation. The children seemed to love the presentation and gave positive feedback; one student said “I want to be Muslim now.” The presentation overall was very positive and gave very insightful information on who Arabs and Muslims are.
