On November 2, 2012, I visited the site of one of our grantees called Inner City Youth Rising 11. Taking place in district 11, their goal is to bring the youth of San Francisco (mainly in district 11) together to share their tough past through music, but mainly Hip Hop. Many of the youth in SF are attracted to this culture and are unable to express their talents. Through this project, youth are able to express their hardships through the music they love.
When I visited their site, I was expecting a studio looking exterior, but rather was looking straight at a house. As I entered, my views changed as I saw all the equipment and their studio. I was surprised at the vast amount of equipment available for recording. As we toured the inside, I enjoyed the happy, and calm atmosphere of the youth on this day, for Friday was more of a relaxing day. I was also able to interview the adult ally, Arturo and get to know more about the program and how they have been getting along with their project. To this day, outreach has been completed, and they have attended some workshops. I overall enjoyed my site visit of ICY Rising 11 and look forward to visiting again!
