Support Free Muni Transportation for All Youth!

Resolution: To adopt the proposal for free Muni Transportation among all youth ( ages 5-17)
Date: Monday, October 1,2012
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

On October 1, 2012, the Youth Commission held a meeting for the resolution on following through with Free Youth Transportation. Commissioner Nicholas Persky gave a brief presentation about what the Youth Commission has done so far with this issue regarding all youth from ages 5-17. At  the end of his presentation, Commissioner Shakleford, Chair of San Francisco's Youth Commission, asks, "The Youth Commission now asks, are there any public comments?" As I heard these words from Commissioner Shakleford, I saw four other people stand up one at a time to speak at the podium in front of these youth leaders. Many of those who support this issue were from POWER (People Organized to Win Employment Rights), and every speaker showed their support for this resolution by sharing what muni means to the people: it is a source of transportation made for the comforts of all people so that anyone who can't afford to pay for a taxi, or doesn't have a car, can ride the bus with ease rather than walk at great lengths. As I got up to speak as a member of not only YEFAB, but also as a person in the youth community, I felt really nervous especially since there was quite a big group in front of me and I had a time limit of two minutes as well. During this time frame, I shared my support towards all the Youth Commissioners who were working to improve the lives of those in our youth community. After all the people that were part of the public finished speaking, all the commissioners voted on whether to adopt this resolution. As I sat in my seat, waiting patiently for every one's responses, each person said "I" (meaning yes, let's adopt this resolution) and as I looked around at the rest of the audience, I could see smiles across every one's faces! This resolution is so unique to me because the Youth Commissioners didn't just begin the process to passing free muni for youth, but they also showed that they are leaders in our city and that what the public says (especially students) makes a difference to help bolster the commissioners' thoughts towards issues regarding the youth. So, if you have an opinion or a comment you would like to make on issues occurring in our city, please come to the meetings that the Youth Commission holds!
