EDUCATION: THE BIG PICTURE: Arab & Muslim Awareness

On October 2, 2012, Gillian Bogart, and myself (Deanne Palaganas) were able to visit one of the schools, Tenderloin Elementary School, where our grantees called the Arab and Muslim Awareness were presenting. This is a group of girls that go around San Francisco, creating presentations and speaking about the Arab and Muslim-Islamic culture and religion to different schools and youth groups. I was very glad to be present, because even though I am at my second year of college, one can never stop learning, and on that day I did just that. I was educated. Imagine, this group of three girls, that ranged from middle school to early high school students, were such powerhouses, giving a presentation about such a complex culture, and more often than wanted, misunderstood, yet they were able to present to elementary students about it. It was enlightening for such young students to understand and take in so much information in just an hour. The kind of class participation, and willingness for the students to actively engage were very astounding.

The students, Gillian, and myself were able to learn more about different Arab dialects, and the countries where they are spread around the world! We also learned about the different foods they offer, and lastly, we learned about the religion of Islam, which is widely practiced around the world by so many different ethnicities and race.
