See Your City: Sunday Streets Hits the Excelsior!

One day, as I was leaving school, walking home alongside a friend, we both look up to find a tower sitting atop what is the peak of San Francisco's McLaren Park, SF's second largest park. We ponder the mysteries of what the blue tower could be, not realizing that the McLaren water tower is a landmark for San Francisco's Excelsior district. This weekend is a chance for you to come out and explore this diverse area as Sunday Streets rolls into the neighborhood!

Sunday Streets is a series of events across the city that block off streets to oncoming traffic and opens the gates for people to explore their city. Neighborhood groups, such as Out of Site, Excelsior Family Connections, the Boys and Girls Club, National Parks Service, Healthy San Francisco, the Department of Public Health and many more, reach out to the public about neighborhood issues. Vendors and businesses line the streets and offer activities for streets teeming with San Franciscans, free bike rentals, bike riding lessons for kids, and many family activities, while multiple stages set up along the neighborhood hold free performances.

You also have the opportunity to volunteer with Sunday Streets by visiting their website. Sunday Streets will not be the only thing going down though! The Excelsior Action Group( who is also looking for volunteers), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the excelsior's commercial corridor, is jumping on the bandwagon and bringing in the 10th annual Excelsior Arts and Music Festival. This is definitely something you do not want to miss. Come experience the full force of San Francisco and it's many community organizations while learning about your city. Plus, you won't want to miss the face painting and the $6 pony rides.
