UC System's Financial Woes

Throughout the current year, the UC (University of California) system has lost about $750 million in state funding. The UC system’s funding received approximately a 20% cut.

If the state cannot increase funding by $125 million for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year, tuition costs for UC schools may possibly be hiked up 6%.  If this 6% increase in tuition is approved, tuition for in-state students will increase $731.  On May 16th, 2012, board members will be meeting in Sacramento to discuss methods in which to raise revenue and cut costs.  Also, if Governor Jerry Brown’s tax plan does not pass in November, then UC schools will need to consider mid-year increases in their tuition for students.  Vice President for budget and capital resources, Patrick Lenz, announced, “We’re at a critical stage at the university. The regents would face more draconian choices if the governor’s initiative fails.”  However, UC students whose families earn under $80,000 a year will continue to receive a sufficient amount of financial aid.
