Gillian and I had the opportunity to talk closely with the College Track & 100% College Prep "Hear Our Voice" youth leaders regarding their proposal to switch up their closing event from May 25 to a later date sometime in September. After speaking with the youth leaders, we both decided that the pros of extending their deadline greatly outweighed the cons. So far the team has confirmed that Supervisor Malia Cohen from district 10 and a environmental activist from their school will be attending the event. The youth have tried to book other officials of San Francisco but with all of them being very busy it was frustrating to not get a response after two months. To better the attendance of the community, the youth leaders would like to keep contacting other officials to fulfill their ultimate goal. Also, moving the event will give them more time to discuss and plan out a successful event. As you all may know, many schools end on May 25th making it hard to guarantee the appearance of principles and students. As I mentioned before, the new College Track building will be moved to 3rd st and so the program will save money on not having to rent a venue. With the new facility opening, the beginning of school and more officials, I agree that the event will be more impactful.
The youth leaders will continue to meet during the summer on a weekly basis. They have struggled together due to the unexpected changes. One of the youth leaders said, "it was a learning experience when people dropped out and a new youth leader had to step up to take their place."
