In the past months every YEFABer has taken on the new role of Program Officer. As program officers we are the main liaison between YEFAB and one of its grantees; this entails helping them in whatever way possible, relaying news back to the board, and checking on their overall progress. My fellow coworker, Nina Sardesh, and I had the opportunity to work with Mission SF’s NEW ERA program. NEW ERA or New Economic Rights for All is a program based in the mission which revolves around bringing social and economic justice by grass root campaigns. They do this by educating youth about the economic conditions and problems in their neighborhoods so that they can then further spread the word. When we made our first visit to their headquarters on Mission st. the youth were hard at work making buttons, fliers, and posters for an upcoming protest. The youth of NEW ERA
During that protest, which took place on the corner of mission and 24th, they attacked payday lenders and check cashing institutions. These institutions prey on those who are already in economic trouble and with limited financial literacy. This is why NEW ERA has made it its mission to educate the target population of these predatory fringe institutions on how to be financially savvy.
If you would like to learn more about NEW ERA and support their fight against economic injustices in San Francisco they are having an upcoming event called “Roots of Financial Security” at the women’s building (on Valencia and 18th) on May 18th 5-7pm. You can register here.
