On November 29, 2012, Myself
(Deanne) along with Program Officer Ron, and a few other DCYF
(Department of Children, Youth, and Their Families) staff were able to receive
a chance at going to a Youth Solidarity Fair, a time of youth from different backgrounds
and or have been affected by violence or incarceration come together in
solidarity and celebration of life. This
event was hosted by a non-profit group called Power along with partnerships of
other anti-violence non-profit groups in San Francisco. This is an especially
exciting event for me, because this event was held at my former high school,
Balboa. I was very happy to see students I attended school with before come to
this event and take part of a nonviolence movement, along with teachers and
school staff I have been with when I was in high school.
I was also very proud of the effort put into this heartfelt event by Ezekiel Osmond, the youth leader that took the lead to make this event happen. Shout Out to Ezekiel and his youth team!
This event was very powerful, because it involved an informative presentation about violence and incarceration statistics that affect our young people, and they also exhibited an amazing mural, along with food, music, a DJ, live performances, and also shirt screening. But, it did not end there. There were also booths present from all the different nonprofits that were involved in this event. Thanks POWER for an empowering and fun event!
