A Call for New Biking Precautions

Simply put, bikers need to obey the same road rules that drivers and motorcyclists follow.

On March 29, Chris Bucchere sped through the intersection of Market and Castro as the yellow light turned red, and hit pedestrian Sutchi Hui, 71. Four days later Hui died at SF General Hospital.
According to Bucchere, he was going too fast to safely stop at the intersection, and decided to go straight through the intersection, which quickly began to fill up with pedestrians. He claimed to head toward the least populated area, which unfortunately directed him into the path of Hui.
Prosecutors have not yet charged Bucchere for this case.

However, recent investigations and a video showing the accident depict Bucchere crashing into Hui head on, and did not appear to attempt to slow down. There appeared to only be three or four pedestrians in the crosswalk at the time, however the video did not show whether the light was yellow or red when Bucchere first enters the intersection. Bucchere stated that he entered the intersection lawfully and that he did everything possible to avoid the accident."

This was a tragic accident, however it demonstrated the result of a big issue. Bikers often break road rules, and that is simply not okay. If you are riding so fast that you cannot stop safely in an intersection, then you are going too fast and you have to slow down. It should not have taken a death to lead people to this conclusion.
