Recently, we, as program officers, made phone calls to our respective grantee youth leaders. We were to bring back information on how the the youth-led projects were coming along. Also, we received monthly reports sent in by the mini-grantee youth. I am proud to be able to work with my grantee because when I talked with the youth leader, he seemed very relaxed and enthusiastic. I looking forward to see what the success will come from these youth-led projects!
During our last meeting, the board members split in to groups to talk about articles on racism. We created posters that listed points on what ways did the writer of the article come about the information that they wrote about. Each of the small groups came back together to share what we had heard and found; I found several things that were useful as well as interesting. Some useful research tools are the Internet such as Google, Books, Magazines, and experimental data. I noticed that the article did not try to falsify their information because they cited whatever quotes they wrote about in their articles. This exercise that the YEFAB members allowed me to realize that there are several incidents in which racism can be very harsh and criticizing. Some of them seem quite ridiculous such as a white man not wanting to work with a black man and also getting extremely irritated after the black man bumped in to him on purpose (in an real-life experiment). That was very eye-opening to see that things like this truly occur in society. You may not experience it, but other people might.
Every meeting, YEFAB produces a great output that is so educational.
