YEFABers Volunteer!

Last year we began brainstorming issues that are in our community in which we were interested in researching on. At the end, we were split into four groups that worked on transportation, domestic violence, education, and poverty. After we finished researching, we decided to affliate ourselves with organizations that are associated with our issues. Throughout January and February, we either volunteered or visited the site of the organization so that we were able to further gather knowledge about our topics.
Nico, Jenny, Wendy, and I worked on the issue of transportation. The organization we wanted to learn more about was the SF Bike Kitchen. A couple of weeks ago, we volunteered at the bike kitchen where we helped sort various parts of a bicycle and even deconstructed wheels! During this day, we were also able to get to know the people who helped make the SF Bike Kitchen possible. Many of these people are volunteers who want to donate their time so that they are able to share their passion of bicycles with others. While talking to them, we also learned about the history of the bike kitchen. At the SF Bike Kitchen, people are given the opportunity to dig through and use the equipment offered for only a small fee of $5. However, volunteering at the bike kitchen for 6 hours will allow a person to begin building a bike for free! Even though by the end of the day our hands were black with grease, we had a great time getting to know more about the SF Bike Kitchen and the people who run it.
